The State of Consciousness

Alfred J. Parker
We cannot get Consciousness through our minds unless we are tuned to it. We, as minds, have to tune ourselves to that state of Consciousness, which we do by degrees.

We do it by throwing off our little habits. For instance, the average person uses his tongue to swear, and so we cut out swearing. That removes one habit and brings us that much closer to the Consciousness. Maybe we lose our temper and say things we should not to hurt people, and so we lop that off and there is that much gone. Then there is greediness--wanting to take rather than give. We must learn to give and be happy in seeing the other person happy--and so we lop off greediness. We believe that we must share, that anything that will make the other person happy will make us happy. We learn that no one person has a right to be happy and everyone else miserable; if so then one is breaking the law and will not maintain that happiness. We lop off jealousy.

We lop them all off until finally our minds are free and we are not beset by moods of depression, jealousy, hate, lust, and greed. Our minds are calm, like a radio that has been properly balanced. All the squeaks have been taken out of it, and when the knob on the dial is turned, the music comes out beautifully. There is much greater mental ability to cope with things. For instance, if two hours every day is spent being angry, or jealous, or lusting for something one does not have, there are two hours of the day gone and lost. Counting two hours of every day in one's life, look at the years that are ruined. Besides that, if one spends two hours in jealousy, the rest of the hours must be tainted. They certainly could not be good, anyway.

As we eliminate these faults, the light begins to shine through us. We can feel that power coming closer, our minds become more clear and so does our vision and concept. We feel better, more beautiful, and we love our fellow man. We love to share and to give, and we love to see the happiness in the other person's eyes. As we do, we are coming closer to the God Principle, because that is the principle of wisdom: to give, to love, and to serve.
